Shift Superintendent Refining

SUMMARY

This position is responsible for supervising and directing the refining process of raw sugar into a food grade, finished product covering one of four shifts.  Responsible for maintaining projected production levels and cost control .The Shift Operations Manager (SOM) is responsible for maintaining plant compliance for, safety, environmental, and health regulations as required by the company, city, county, state and federal agencies. The SOM will also serve as the Site Incident Commander for the entire Port Wentworth property.  The Shift Operations Manager has site-wide responsibility during the off shift to include waste treatment, utilities, maintenance, bulk, packaging and refinery.

FUNCTIONS

  • Ensures raw materials are received, stored and refined into finished goods for assigned shift at highest possible yields and quality.
  • Ensures compliance with all regulations including environmental, safety and health. Accountable for the safety and welfare of all on site associates on their shift. Functions as site incident commander during emergency situations.
  • Directs operators to set priorities, supervises activities, assists with troubleshooting process problems, and coordinates work across stations.
  • Constantly reviews process parameters and analytical data to adjust processes for optimum yield and throughput.
  • Develops work schedules to ensure all positions are covered to meet business needs.
  • Assist in establishing and implementing departmental policies, goals, objectives, and procedures.
  • Responsible for food safety by ensuring proper housekeeping conditions at all times, including sanitation schedules.
  • Deploys, applies and supports techniques and methods of Imperial Sugar’s Continuous Improvement programs.
  • Assist in determining staffing requirements, including interviewing, hiring and training new employees by overseeing those personnel processes.
  • Monitors daily maintenance activities, writes necessary work orders, reviews maintenance schedule, and ensures maintenance execution supports production performance.
  • Actively engages in associate training and development activities and fosters an environment of learning and continuous improvement. Tracks associate performance and provides necessary feedback to associates.
  • During off shift, on nights and weekends, oversees utilities, bulk sugar, packaging and other operations.
  • Meets with outgoing and incoming peer to communicate pertinent operating information.

 

Additional Responsibilities

  • Communicates significant issues effecting compliance and throughput to management team. Writes summaries, memos, and reports as needed.
  • Responsible for assisting with managing operating budget.  Assists in the development of short and long-term cost reduction ideas.  Reviews budget summaries.
  • Monitors key performance indicators of each work station. Responds to and troubleshoots abnormalities in daily operations.

QUALIFICATIONS

The following are the basic qualifications:

  • High School Degree or GED equivalency

 

The following are the preferred qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Chemical or Mechanical Engineering preferred. 

 

Experience

The following are the basic qualifications:

  • 10 years of related experience in Food Processing (Sugar preferred)
  • Hands On – Floor Experience
  • Has attended or willing to attend Sugar School
  • Two or more years of Supervisory/Leadership experience in manufacturing

 

 

The following are the preferred qualifications:

  • Ten or more years of production experience in Food Industry (sugar)
  • Six Sigma training

 

Employee Supervision

  • The supervisor assigns problems in broad general terms and is interested only in overall results achieved.
  • Direct:  Total employees supervised approximately 10-15.
  • Indirect:  150 – 180 employees and contractors

 

 

Decision Making/Accountability

  • Requires independent judgment that affects the entire facility.

 

 

Equipment Used

  • Basic office equipment including Windows software, and Maximo.

 

WORKING CONDITIONS

 

 

  • Work is performed in a climate-controlled open area shared with other employees. The noise level is loud. Work is regularly performed away from the office more than half the day and near moving mechanical parts. Work with caustic or toxic chemicals, or with fumes and airborne particles. Noise level may be higher when visiting other facilities.
