SUMMARY
The Safety & Environemental Manager is responsible for establishing, managing, and directing the overall health and safety strategy of Sugar Manufacturing. This critical role involves developing policies, systems, and processes to ensure the company's operations comply with health, safety, and environmental legislation. The Health and Safety Manager leads the organization in preventing accidents, injuries, and health issues in the workplace, promoting a culture of safety, and ensuring the well-being of all employees.
FUNCTIONS
- Develop and implement strategic health and safety plans to achieve organizational objectives and ensure compliance with legal standards.
- Lead and mentor the health and safety team, setting departmental goals and monitoring performance.
- Oversee the assessment of risks across the organization, ensuring appropriate measures are in place to mitigate hazards.
- Direct the development and delivery of health and safety training programs for employees at all levels.
- Liaise with external regulatory bodies and stakeholders on health and safety matters, representing the organization in a professional manner.
- Monitor and report on the effectiveness of health and safety strategies, preparing detailed reports for executive management and the board.
- Ensure continuous improvement of health and safety practices through benchmarking, best practices, and staying abreast of new regulations.
- Manage crisis situations and incidents, leading investigations, and implementing corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
- Promote a positive culture of health and safety within the organization.
- Allocate resources and manage the budget for health and safety initiatives and programs.
- Manage budgetary aspects of operational support activities, including forecasting, allocation, purchasing and expense tracking.
- Adhere to safety, health, and environmental protocols and regulations.
- Additional functions required as business needs.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor's or master’s degree in Occupational Health, Safety Management, Environmental Science, or a related field.
- Professional health and safety certifications (such as CSP or CIH) highly preferred.
- Extensive experience in health and safety management roles, with a proven track record at a strategic level.
- In-depth knowledge of health and safety regulations and legislation.
- Strong leadership, strategic planning, and communication skills.
- Demonstrated ability to influence and engage stakeholders at all levels within an organization.
WORKING CONDITIONS
- 80% of the work environment is conducted in an environmentally controlled office atmosphere, with low exposure to adverse customer relationships, using repetitive motions.
- 20% of the work environment is an industrial setting exposed to large industrial machinery and inclement weather.
