Company Overview: 

U.S. Sugar produces approximately 6.5 million tons of sugarcane annually on more than 200,000 acres of land in the South Florida area. U.S. Sugar owns and operates the largest private agricultural short line railroad in the country and is the only sugar company in the continental United States that transports its harvested cane supply from its farms and other growers by railroad to its sugar factory.

 

General Summary

Responsible for corn production activities including land preparation, planting, fertilization, irrigation, crop monitoring, pest management, harvesting, and logistics coordination across multiple farming locations. Supervises a team of employees and is responsible for ensuring production goals, quality standards, and safety requirements.

 

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

  • Oversee the planning, preparation, and implementation of all corn production activities including planting, fertilization, irrigation, cultivation, pest management, crop monitoring, and harvest preparation.
  • Prepare daily, weekly, and seasonal work schedules to ensure production goals are achieved while maximizing efficiency and productivity.
  • Coordinate farming operations across multiple growing locations and ensure equipment, personnel, and resources are properly allocated to support production needs.
  • Monitor crop conditions and work with management and agronomy personnel to evaluate crop performance, identify production concerns, and implement corrective actions when necessary.
  • Coordinate harvesting activities and logistics to ensure timely harvesting, transportation, and delivery of corn production.
  • Manage farm equipment utilization, including the scheduling and allocation of equipment between various farming locations. Communicate equipment repair and maintenance needs to appropriate personnel.
  • Assist management in developing and implementing production plans, logistics schedules, and resource allocation strategies to support seasonal operations.
  • Responsible for training employees to perform duties safely, efficiently, and effectively. Ensure employees are performing at optimum production levels and contributing to overall operational success.
  • Review and approve employee time records, attendance records, and personnel-related changes in a timely manner.
  • Responsible for developing and maintaining positive employee relations and promoting teamwork, accountability, and operational excellence.
  • Monitor production costs and assist management in identifying opportunities to improve efficiency, productivity, and cost control.
  • Partner with maintenance, harvest operations, agronomy, transportation, and other departments to ensure effective communication and coordination of activities.
  • Provide the highest quality professional and technical assistance to internal customers while maintaining professional and courteous relationships with all departments within the company.
  • Coach, counsel, and educate employees regarding department, company, and Human Resources policies and procedures. Support United States Sugar Corporation’s Standards of Conduct and take corrective action when necessary.
  • Comply with and enforce environmental regulations, maintain safety rules and standards, and ensure compliance with all U.S.S.C. and Agricultural Department policies and procedures.
  • Evaluate operational results in relation to established goals and recommend improvements to increase efficiency, productivity, quality, and cost effectiveness.
  • Attend departmental meetings, operational meetings, and safety meetings as required.
  • Perform all other duties as directed by management representatives.

 

 

Qualifications and Requirements:

 

  • Minimum of five (5) years of agricultural experience with at least two (2) years in a supervisory or management capacity.
  • High school diploma or equivalent; a degree in agriculture, business, or a related field is preferred.
  • Any equivalent combination of experience and training that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
  • Solid working knowledge of agricultural production practices including planting, fertilization, irrigation, cultivation, pest management, crop monitoring, harvesting, equipment operations, land preparation, and farm maintenance.
  • Knowledge of agricultural logistics, equipment scheduling, resource allocation, and seasonal production planning.
  • Ability to coordinate multiple projects, locations, priorities, personnel, and resources simultaneously.
  • Ability to function independently, demonstrate flexibility, efficiently manage time, and prioritize workload.
  • Must possess the ability to make independent decisions when circumstances warrant such action and exercise sound judgment.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, management staff, contractors, and senior leadership.
  • Ability to respond effectively to inquiries and concerns from employees, internal customers, and members of the business community.
  • Working knowledge of computers and the ability to enter and retrieve data using company systems, software applications, and other office equipment.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret operational reports, financial information, and technical materials.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to effectively communicate with employees, peers, and management.
  • Must be able to coordinate multiple responsibilities in a fast-paced agricultural environment.
  • Valid driver’s license required. Commercial driver’s license preferred.

Working Conditions:

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee works inside an office on a regular basis. 
  • Working conditions may be rainy, hot, humid, dusty, etc. depending on the weather
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud 
  • May require travel in between areas.
  • Duties of this job are also performed outside in an agricultural environment. 
  • Employee may be required to drive a vehicle for extended time periods.
  • May be required to work outside when assisting and supporting farm functions as it pertains to the position.
  • Extended hours may be required during peak planting and harvest seasons.

 

 

Physical Requirements:

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit. 
  • The employee is required to stand, walk, use hands to handle and/or move various objects, tools and/or controls, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, talk, hear, and see.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. 
  • Ability to freely access all areas of the farm including farm offices, tractor sheds, various    farm equipment, etc.
  • Ability to move or handle various items throughout the farm generally weighing between 0-65 pounds.  Ability to lift and carry up to 65 pounds.
  • Ability to work varied hours and days to oversee multiple operations.
