This is a rotating shift-work position with periodic overtime requirements, including weekends and holidays, working independently and with minimal supervision. The Raw Sugar Warehouse Operator plays a critical role in the safe, efficient, and high-quality production and storage of raw sugar. This position is responsible for operating and maintaining the VHP dryer, sugar handling systems, dump trucks, and pay loaders to transport, stack, and store sugar in bulk within the warehouse. The role requires adherence to strict safety, quality, and operational standards in a 24/7 manufacturing environment reporting to the Shift Manager.
FUNCTIONS
- Abide by all Company policies outlined in the Employee Handbook and comply with all Company, Local, State and Federal regulations relating to Health, Safety, Operations, etc.
- Successfully participate in and complete all training sessions, safety classes, pre-shift meetings, and/or certifications related to the position.
- Operate the VHP dryer to achieve product quality specifications.
- Operate sugar scales and conveyor systems to transfer sugar to and from warehouses.
- Drive articulated dump trucks and midsize pay loaders (25,000 – 45,000 lbs. with less than 8 cubic yard capacity) to load, transport, and stack sugar.
- Use additional equipment such as man-lifts, skid-steers, and other machinery as needed to support operations.
- Conduct routine inspections and preventive maintenance (refueling, lubrication, filter changes, part replacement, cleaning).
- Assist in mechanical repairs and troubleshoot equipment issues.
- Ensure accurate documentation of equipment status and maintenance performed.
- Maintain work areas in a clean, organized, and hazard-free condition.
- Maintain clear communication with the Shift Manager and plant personnel at all times.
- Report operational issues, maintenance needs, and safety concerns immediately.
- Support and perform departmental needs by performing related tasks as assigned by supervisor.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Must have positive results from Company-designated tests designed to measure basic skills, job skills, mechanical aptitude and/or other interests, skills and characteristics.
- Must be 18 years of age or older and have a good work record and disciplinary history.
- Applicant must be able to read, write and speak the English language in order to comprehend instructions on the job and in the classroom, to communicate via radio, and to ensure personal and co-worker safety on the job.
- Must have been employed full time for a minimum of twelve (12) months within the past five years (60 months) operating either:
- articulated dump trucks, or similar equipment such as straight frame dump trucks and/or tractor trailer or
- midsize pay loaders (25,000 – 45,000lbs with less than 8 cubic yard capacity)
- Applicant must be in good health and physically able to perform all phases of the work. Must be abe to demonstrate physical ability to perform the essential functions of the job including being able to:
- drive an articulated dump truck
- drive a front end loader
- enter into the VHP Dryer and Baghouse to perform work
- Must have an understanding of the operation of PLC automated processing equipment with assorted rotating elements and interlocks.
- Must be able to use both feet and hands to manipulate foot and hand controls simultaneously
- Must obtain skidsteer, forklift and boomlift certification within 30 days of being awarded the job. Occasionally operate forklift, man-lift, skid-steer, dump trucks, and other heavy equipment as needed
- Must have basic mechanical skills including use of wrenches, use of rigging and lifting equipment, opening flanges and removing valves
- New hires must pass a drug test and other pre-employment background screening, and successfully complete any required training or orientation course.
WORKING CONDITIONS
80% of the work environment is conducted while seated in heavy equipment operating in an open outdoor environment, exposed to variable/extreme weather, reduced visibility, artificial light, blowing dust and particles, and moving machinery while wearing PPE (i.e.: hard hat, goggles, and/or ear plugs), regularly climbing stairs or ladders, kneeling, crawling, bending, stooping, squatting, reaching, and walking on soft and uneven ground containing slip and trip hazards.
20% of the work environment is conducted in a covered environment, exposed to heights and rapidly changing temperatures including extreme heat; regularly climbing stairs or ladders, kneeling, crawling, bending, stooping, squatting, reaching, walking on uneven ground, and routinely lifting, loading, pushing and/or pulling of up to 55 lbs. unassisted. Will be fitted for a respirator.
