Locomotive Mechanic II

Job Summary
The Locomotive Mechanic II assists in the maintenance, service, and repair of railroad rolling stock and related equipment in a dynamic, fast-paced, and team-oriented work environment. This position includes inspecting and maintaining locomotives in compliance with Part 229 (Locomotive Safety Standards) of the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR). Responsibilities include performing Calendar Day Inspections (CDI) per CFR Part 229.21, 92-Day Inspections per CFR Part 229.25, and assisting with locomotive and equipment repairs. Additional duties include cleaning locomotives and facilities, delivering parts, operating support equipment, and performing basic switching tasks. This role requires availability for on-call emergencies, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
Responsibilities and Qualifications
- Perform locomotive inspections and maintenance in accordance with CFR Part 229.
- Conduct Calendar Day Inspections (CDI) and 92-Day Inspections.
- Assist with repairs and maintenance of locomotives, cane cars, industrial equipment, and support equipment.
- Clean locomotives, equipment, and servicing areas/facilities.
- Deliver parts and components as needed.
- Operate support equipment such as service trucks, forklifts, and man lifts.
- Perform basic switching duties as required.
- Follow all safety procedures and ensure proper housekeeping standards.
- Be available to assist emergencies, including derailments, nights, weekends, and holidays.
- Minimum of 2 years of experience in mobile equipment or vehicle maintenance, or completion of a Heavy Equipment Program at a Technical College.
- Ability to pass the Mechanic 1 Mechanical test with a score of 70% or higher.
- Strong motivation and commitment to safety, efficiency, and reducing equipment downtime.
- Ability to learn and perform maintenance, service, and repair tasks with minimal supervision.
- Clear communication skills and a desire to follow a career advancement path.
- Proficient in basic computer skills, including Microsoft Excel, Word, and Outlook.
- Ability to maintain detailed maintenance records using a computerized management system.
- Capable of performing mathematical calculations and using measurement devices accurately.
- Must provide and use the necessary hand tools and equipment for the job.
- Ability to read, speak, and write English.
- Valid Class E driver’s license or higher.
- Ability to obtain forklift and man lift certification within 30 days of hire.
- Willingness to work nights, weekends, holidays, and overtime as needed.
- Ability to work in various weather conditions and locations within the company.

Working Conditions:
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee works and drives in outside weather conditions on a regular basis.
- Working conditions may be rainy, hot, humid, dusty, foggy etc. depending on the weather and may be at night time.
- The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud.
- Duties of this job are also performed in an office and shop environment.
- Exposed to heights of up to 40 feet and rapidly changing temperatures, including extreme heat and other weather conditions.
Physical Requirements:
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, climb, kneel & crawl.
- The employee is frequently required to stand, walk, use hands to handle and/or move various objects, tools and/or controls, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, talk, hear and see.
- Specific vision abilities required by this job include distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Visibility must extend to 62’ and beyond.
- Ability to move or handle various items generally weighing between 0-75 pounds. Ability to lift and carry up to 75 pounds.
- Prolonged kneeling, standing, and looking up. Employee is required to regularly climb stairs and ladders, and will perform overhead work while standing, kneeling, or lying flat, and will constantly crawl, bend at the waist and reach overhead, occasionally lift, pull or carry up to 75 lbs., and walk on uneven ground containing trip hazards.
