SUMMARY

Reporting to the Equipment Supervisor, this is a day shift position with periodic overtime requirements, including nights, weekends, holidays, and occasionally working rotating shift as needed.  The excavator operator will work independently, or in a team, to safely and efficiently operate hydraulic excavators, and other heavy equipment, moving muck, sugar, and other materials.

FUNCTIONS

Abide by all Company policies outlined in the Employee Handbook.Successfully participate in and complete all training sessions, safety classes, pre-shift meetings, and certifications related to the position.Operate hydraulic excavators, up to the operating weight of 144,000lbs, in a safe and efficient manner.Conduct, daily, pre and post operational inspections, and properly fill out inspection check lists.Conduct periodic inspections of all equipment and work areas to identify hazards as work progresses.Will be responsible for cleaning equipment, providing minor preventative maintenance and making minor repairs of various types of equipment.Perform all other necessary tasks including, but not limited to; operating various types of equipment and/or vehicles in multiple departments, performing manual labor as needed, and assisting in training/mentoring of other operators.Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS

Must have a minimum of 2 years of full time experience, within the last 5 years, operating large hydraulic excavators weighing more than 70 tons.Must have positive results from Company-designated tests designed to measure basic skills, job skills, mechanical aptitude and/or other interests, skills and characteristics.Must be 18 years of age or older and have a good work record and disciplinary history.Applicant must be able to read, write and speak the English language in order to comprehend instructions on the job and to ensure personal and co-worker safety on the work site.Applicant must be in good health and physically able to perform all phases of the work.New hires must pass a drug test and other pre-employment background screening, and successfully complete any required training or orientation course.

WORKING CONDITIONS

80% of the work environment is conducted while seated in an enclosed control cab operating heavy equipment outdoors in variable/extreme weather conditions, and using two hands and two feet simultaneously to operate controls.  Required to regularly climb up and down ladders to access the control cab.  Will routinely move material in a warehouse environment, and exposed to heights.

20% of the work environment is conducted while walking in an open outdoor environment on uneven ground, exposed to variable/extreme weather, moving machinery, insects and other wildlife, with reduced visibility due to blowing dust and particles.  Will routinely move corrosive and other potentially hazardous materials using heavy equipment.  Will regularly be required to perform manual labor, lift, carry, push and pull of up to 55 lbs. unassisted.
