Assistant Roving Operator

Reporting to the Team Leader, this is a shift work position with periodic overtime requirements, working independently and with minimal supervision, safely and efficiently monitoring Power Plant operations to ensure a continuous supply of boiler fuel and steam transfer, including conducting scheduled maintenance inspections, breakdowns, cleanouts, and chemical sampling.

FUNCTIONS

  • Abide by all Company policies outlined in the Employee Handbook.
  • Successfully participate in and complete all training sessions or certifications related to the position.
  • Demonstrate physical ability to perform the essential functions of the job.  Applicant must be in good health and physically able to perform all phases of the work.
  • Operate forklift, pay loader (front end loader) and other heavy equipment as needed, using both feet and hands to manipulate foot and hand controls simultaneously.  Occasionally provide relief to the Pay Loader Operator.
  • Conduct equipment breakdowns and clean up, maintain checklists and written documentation concerning equipment status ensuring proper operation, lubricate equipment when appropriate, and assist Mechanics when needed.
  • Operate and monitor motors, carriers, belts, feeders, and industrial boilers, ensuring proper delivery of fuel, clearing obstructions to fuel delivery, and facilitating boiler waste removal.
  • Use two hands to test boiler water for chemical acceptability, add chemicals to water solutions, visually identify colored chemical reactions in test tubes, add/subtract or multiply/divide liquid volume measurement, refuse delivery of boiler water with unacceptable qualities, and document results.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must have positive results from Company-designated tests designed to measure basic skills, job skills, mechanical aptitude and/or other interests, skills and characteristics.
  • Must be 18 years of age or older and have a good work record and disciplinary history.
  • 2 years’ experience as a mechanic, industrial maintenance, pipefitting, steam boiler operation, or completion of an applicable certification program. 
  • Operational proficiency in computers and software to conduct accurate data entry.
  • Applicant must be able to read, write and speak the English language in order to comprehend instructions on the job and in the classroom, to communicate via radio, and to ensure personal and co-worker safety on the job.
  • New hires must pass a drug test and other pre-employment background screening, and successfully complete any required training or orientation course.
  • Must have color vision and be able to distinguish the red/green spectrum due to chemical sampling.
  • Obtain forklift certification within 30 days of employment.

WORKING CONDITIONS

80% of the work environment is conducted in an open outdoor environment, exposed to heights and rapidly changing temperatures including extreme heat, weather conditions, blowing dust and particles, burning bulk and liquid fuel, while wearing PPE (i.e.: hard hat, goggles, hair net, ear plugs, and/or full body chemical resistant suites), regularly climbing stairs, kneeling, crawling, bending, stooping, reaching, and walking on uneven ground containing trip hazards. 

20% of the work environment requires routinely lifting, loading, pushing and pulling of up to 55 lbs. unassisted, regular exposure to caustic chemicals, electronic magnets, and pressurized steam, routinely using heavy equipment and machinery with moving parts, and occasionally accessing enclosed/confined spaces, may be fitted for and wear a respirator.
